A sermon by Pastor Isaac:
Read Mark 6:1-13:
1And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. 2And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. 4But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. 5And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. 6And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.
7And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; 8And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: 9But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. 10And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. 11And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. 12And they went out, and preached that men should repent. 13And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
According to Jewish tradition, it is disrespectful to refer a child to his mother (Refer to Judges 11:1, 2 John 8:41, 9:29). However we can see in verse 3 that the people (his own townspeople) did just that for they could not believe that someone like Jesus who was a carpenter could speak profound truth. They were not pleased and rejected Jesus. Therefore sometimes it is hardest to reach or convince those who know you best. As the saying goes, 'familiarity breeds contempt'.
Jesus did not stay for long and went round about the villagers to teach, for there are many people out there who are in need of the gospel and they could very much be more open hearted and open minded. Do not limit your witness to those who are close to you but rather reach out to people of all nations. However do not give up on those who are close to you. Continue praying for their salvation.
The reason behind sending the apostles 2 by 2 can be explained in Ecclesiates 4:9 (9Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.). From verses 8 to 9, God is also telling us to travel light and avoid excessive possessions while doing missionary work. Loyalty to the Kingdom of God leaves no room for attachment to material security. From verses 10 to 11, God is saying that we will encounter both hospitality and hostility.
Therefore, the time is now for us to reach out to the lost and win them back for Christ. There are many people out there who are more open and more hungry. The lost are in need of repentance which is a gift only made possible through our Lord Jesus Christ.
There are 3 components of repentance:
Confession - mind (You are right and I am wrong.) Contrition - emotions
Change - action
That is why in verse 12, the apostles went out and preached that men should repent for it is written in Luke 13:1-5, 1There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. As Christians we are not just spectators but rather partners in Jesus' mission who are sent out to win back lost souls for his Kingdom. For in Mark 6:7, the word 'send' actually means to send someone with a special commission to represent another to accomplish his work. In other words, we as Christians are commissioned by God to represent Him to accomplish His work. So go forth and make a change to the world we are living in and pray that his Kingdom will boom across the continents!
